Filming Barinageddon

After NRMA Insurance bought the famous Barina, plans started being drawn up for the tests the Barina would be subject to.

Producing a tongue-in-cheek movie trailer (below) in which the Barina comes to life, Chimney decided to shoot at NRMA Insurance’s actual research and testing facility, IAG Research Centre. In the perfect position to be involved we were asked to produce a behind the scenes, a task that I took on solo, as my colleague was tied up editing off site.

Shooting from roughly 10am until midnight, it was a long but exciting day. With smoke machines, incredible lighting rigs and a crew of 15-20 bustling around the Research Centre’s workshop.

Whilst we had hired a Movi M5, I found it far to heavy to maintain over a 12 hour shoot and lends itself more to a two person camera team which was not feasible, so I opted for handheld or tripod shots.

Autonomous Emergency Braking

Produced whilst employed at IAG Research Centre, this video was produced to accompany a media release regarding Autonomous Emergency Braking and the premium price reduction launched by NRMA Insurance for cars where the technology functions well and is standard. See an example media response here.

As a small explainer that was launched on YouTube and internally, it was mostly a matter of using the content of the media package. To add some more interest we green screened Robert McDonald, NRMA Insurance Research Manager, and incorporated shots of toy cars that also have AEB.

Lane Filtering

Produced whilst employed at IAG Research Centre these NRMA Insurance videos take a look at the introduction of motorcycle lane filtering laws in NSW. Informing viewers on the laws and highlighting some dangers and risks associated with lane filtering. As this is a new law versions were produced targeted at motorcycle riders and one for car drivers.

Collaboratively produced, my colleague and I both set about shooting and then separated in post with one taking the motorcycle version and the other the car version, I took on the motorcycle version. There was overlap in the animations and in these parts we again worked together.

As this type of video requires ‘catching’ people in the act of doing the wrong thing shooting took an enormous amount of time, driving around and trolling through hours of on-car action cam footage.

Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro with graphics and animations produced in Illustrator and After Effects.
