We Bought the Barina

You may have seen the viral sensation of Buy My Barina. Produced by Chimney Group. Well NRMA Insurance bought his Barina and so we created a response video showing the public what the car really looked like. You may notice a cameo from the cars original owner as we “test” his precious Barina.

I went on leave to get married as this video was being produced so I was involved in the initial shots and the beginning of the edit process, with my colleague doing an incredible job perfecting the video.

Produced whilst working at IAG Research Centre, this video was launched alongside the Barinageddon campaign and featured in a Cars Guide front page article.

Filming Barinageddon

After NRMA Insurance bought the famous Barina, plans started being drawn up for the tests the Barina would be subject to.

Producing a tongue-in-cheek movie trailer (below) in which the Barina comes to life, Chimney decided to shoot at NRMA Insurance’s actual research and testing facility, IAG Research Centre. In the perfect position to be involved we were asked to produce a behind the scenes, a task that I took on solo, as my colleague was tied up editing off site.

Shooting from roughly 10am until midnight, it was a long but exciting day. With smoke machines, incredible lighting rigs and a crew of 15-20 bustling around the Research Centre’s workshop.

Whilst we had hired a Movi M5, I found it far to heavy to maintain over a 12 hour shoot and lends itself more to a two person camera team which was not feasible, so I opted for handheld or tripod shots.

Produced whilst employed at IAG Research Centre, this short video was originally produced as Facebook content to accompany a media release. See an example of the media storm in this SMH article: Crash Test Doggies.

As our high speed camera was having issues at this time the high speed footage was shot with the help of Macs Image. Shooting at 500 frames per second I certainly had a ton of work to do rotoscoping the logo behind the car.

These shots get reused in the Purina PetLife Roadie video and can be see across the interwebs in various videos produced out of the media release.
